The floorboard orientation is completely up to the customer. However, it is often preferred to lay the boards left to right as you walk in.
This is so the lines ( if not installed perfectly parallel ) are not as obvious as you first walk in: Wooden Floor Advice.
There should also be a gap of around 5-10mm left around the edge of the flooring to allow for the natural movement. This is then covered by the skirting boards.
